As soon as a computer has an internet connection, the time is regularly synchronized with time servers on the internet. The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is provided for this purpose. NTP makes it possible that the local time on the computer deviates only minimally (in the microsecond range) from the time given by atomic clocks. Another advantage is that the then (almost) perfectly accurate time can also be used to readjust the CMOS clock from time to time.
There are various ways to use NTP:
In distributions with systemd (see Chapter 20, Section 20.1), the time-sync target can be active. This invokes the start of the systemd-timesyncd daemon, which takes care of the time setting via NTP.
