GNOME programs store their settings centrally in the dconf system. All dconf data is located in the binary database file, .config/dconf/user. GNOME programs access the dconf database directly via application programming interface (API) functions. If you want to read or change dconf settings from the outside, you should install the dconf-editor package and start the program of the same name (see Figure 4.21).
The dconf and gsettings commands allow you to change the dconf settings also in the terminal or by using a script. The following command causes Nautilus to use the list view by default, and not the icon view:
user$ gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences \ default-folder-viewer 'list-view'
