sudo takes a different approach than su. The program, after appropriate configuration, allows certain users to run programs with root privileges. For security reasons, the user's own password must be entered again—that is, not the root password. This is especially useful on servers because it eliminates the tedious and insecure management of a common root password for multiple administrators.
sudo then runs these programs as if they were started by a different user (default: root). This allows individual users to perform admin tasks or run system-critical commands without having to know the root password. sudo logs all executed commands and failed authentication attempts in the syslog. ...
