Apache itself can only transfer static websites. However, all modern websites use dynamic pages. Each time such a page is requested, Apache starts an external program, processes the code of the page, and delivers a customized page as a result. Thus the page may contain, for example, the current time, the result of a database query, a constantly changing advertisement, and so on.
Countless programming languages can be used for programming dynamic websites, such as PHP, Python, Java, or JavaScript. The basic idea of a PHP web page is that the file with the *.php identifier contains both HTML and PHP code. PHP code is introduced with the <?php tag and ends with ?>.
