“Real” tests with a mail client cannot begin until the Postfix and Dovecot configuration has been completed. The following points are important during configuration (see Figure 26.3):
Use IMAP (not POP).
Enable STARTTLS for both SMTP (outgoing mail) and IMAP (which is often incorrectly called incoming mail).
If you use a self-signed certificate, you must explicitly accept it—often not during configuration, but the first time you establish a connection.
Some email clients behave quite “intelligently” when it comes to mail configuration. They try common domain names and ports and use the settings that are most likely to fit. This usually works quite well with Thunderbird in particular.
