17.2 Graphics Drivers
Before I describe the configuration and operation of X and Wayland in the following sections, I want to discuss the biggest problem of both graphics systems here: the lack of support for modern NVIDIA graphics cards by open-source drivers.
The vast majority of all current PCs and notebooks contain graphics chips (graphical processing units [GPUs]) from the following three companies: AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA.
The good news is that there are open-source drivers for all three GPU types. The drivers for Intel and AMD work excellently, while the nouveau driver for NVIDIA GPUs is mediocre to good (the older your hardware the better).
