The kernel does not always have to be recompiled if a detail in the kernel is to be changed! There are two ways to affect the kernel without recompiling:
First, you can use the boot loader to pass parameters to the kernel during system startup. This mechanism is the subject of this section.
Alternately, you can change a number of kernel functions dynamically—that is, during operation. This type of intervention is particularly common for controlling network functions and is described in Section 21.7.
