17 Graphics System
The Linux graphics system is currently experiencing an upheaval. After several decades of using the X Window System (not windows, with a plural s!) as a basis, the transition to the successor system Wayland started in 2017. Fedora has been using Wayland by default for several years, RHEL since version 8, Debian since version 10, and Ubuntu since version 21.04.
Wayland is therefore the standard for modern installations. However, the X window system remains installed in parallel and serves as a fallback in case of driver problems. In the application, the change from X to Wayland should be invisible: everything looks the same as before, and ideally everything should work the same as before.
