14.11 Printing System (CUPS)
On Linux and macOS, the Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS, https://cups.org) is responsible for processing and buffering print jobs and for converting the print data to the printer's format. Because I have already briefly described the configuration of a printer in GNOME and KDE in Chapter 4, Section 4.4.4 and in Chapter 5, Section 5.4, I will go into more detail about the internal details of CUPS at this point. The section is of particular interest if you encounter problems configuring your printer or if you have special requests that cannot be met with the GNOME or KDE configuration tools.
