A typical Unix system consists of thousands of files. During the development of Unix, certain rules have emerged about in which directories what files are usually stored. These rules were adapted to the specifics of Linux and summarized in a separate document: the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS; see https://refspecs.linuxfoundation.org/fhs.shtml). Most Linux distributions adhere to this standard.
The information summarized in this section will give you some initial guidance. I have taken not only the FHS into account, but also the common habits of popular Linux distributions.
The file system starts with the root directory. There are usually no files there, only directories:
