Where possible, I try to focus on one program at a time in this book—especially in the server section. With web servers, this is increasingly difficult: the NGINX program now has a higher market share than Apache.
The popularity of NGINX results from the fact that it delivers static web pages more efficiently than Apache. However, for websites implemented with Java, JavaScript, PHP, and the like, the speed advantage is largely invalid. The largest share of the computing time is now taken up by the respective programming language and the database server that supplies the dynamically generated content.
