To call Emacs simply an editor is not enough: the program is suitable not only for editing texts, but also as a complete development environment and, die hard Linux fans, even as an email client. Those who have grown up with Unix use Emacs as a substitute operating system, as it were, for all the functions of everyday work. In my case, it isn’t quite so dramatic, but the fact is that I have written this book (and many others) in Emacs since the first edition!
