24.3 Let's Encrypt
Since 2016, the Let's Encrypt organization (https://letsencrypt.org) has been offering free certificates. These certificates are very widely used. By mid-2023, there were over 300 million active certificates from Let's Encrypt in use. At the same time, there are now other providers for free certificates, such as ZeroSSL. So the obvious question is, “Why spend any more money on third-party certificates?” Let's Encrypt comes with two major limitations: For one thing, the certificates are only valid for 90 days. To get around this disadvantage, the system must be set up in such a way that the certificates are automatically updated on a regular basis. (This is not difficult.)
