In modern distributions, Linux starts the graphics system directly, and Linux beginners often don't even know that text consoles exist at all. From time to time, however, it happens that the configuration for the graphics system is faulty or that no graphics system is available for other reasons. In server installations or in virtual machines, the graphics system is often deliberately omitted. In those cases, you’ll have to get used to the text consoles. For elementary settings like keyboard layout and font, either the kbd system or the newer console system is responsible, depending on the distribution. In detail, the configuration looks a little different for each distribution.
