As a foretaste, so to speak, of the following sections, I will summarize here how to deal with external data media on Linux at the command level. This section is intended for Linux users who already have some experience working in the terminal and do not always use a desktop system such as KDE or GNOME. Details and basic information on the commands presented here will follow later in the chapter.
There are often times when you want to quickly format a USB flash drive or SD card on Linux so that the data medium can later be used on a Windows notebook computer or in the camera. The procedure described here also applies to external hard disks.
