After a Linux installation, a menu for selecting the preferred operating system appears when the computer is restarted (see Figure 19.2). The appearance of GRUB can vary greatly depending on the configuration. Some distributions start GRUB in graphics mode and thus take away the spartan look of the program. To be able to use various additional functions of GRUB, you must exit the graphics mode by pressing the (Esc) key.
Other distributions avoid displaying the GRUB menu at all if possible. For example, if Ubuntu is the only operating system installed on a computer, you will only get to see the GRUB menu if you press a key during the computer startup ((Shift) is enough).
