33 Windows Subsystem for Linux
Microsoft introduced a fundamentally new process in 2016: Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) enables you to install Linux distributions directly in Windows.
In the first WSL version, Linux system functions were replaced by corresponding Windows functions. This allowed Linux programs to run without a real Linux kernel! This changed in 2019 with WSL2. Since then, WSL has been using a real kernel running through the Hyper-V virtualization technology. In most use cases, especially when accessing the file system, WSL2 produced a considerable improvement in performance.
