Many distributions have separate packages for the client and server applications. The client packages are usually installed by default so that access to network directories works right away. If you want to share network directories yourself, you also need the server functions, which are contained in the samba package in most distributions.
Samba provides its services through two background processes:
nmbd is used for internal administration and as a name server. The daemon also takes care of the browsing functions (SMB1 only) or can act as a WINS server.
smbd provides the interface for the clients and gives them access to the directories and printers.
