16.7 Pacman
Pacman stands for Package Manager and refers to the package management system for Arch Linux and derived distributions such as Manjaro. (Do not confuse Pacman with the openSUSE-specific package source, packman!) It is controlled by the pacman command, whereby, in contrast to the RPM and DEB world, there is no separation between a low-level and a high-level command.
Arch Linux packages are basically simple TAR archives that contain binaries of the respective program or library. The *.pkg.tar.zst identifier indicates the intended use as a pacman package and the compression via zstd (tar option --zstd). The package also contains some files with meta information about the package, such as .BUILDINFO, .MTREE, and .PKGINFO.
