It isn’t easy to determine which drivers and components are active in a currently running graphics system.
A look at the process list reveals whether X (more precisely, the X server with the program name Xorg) or Wayland is running:
user$ ps ax | egrep -i "xorg|wayland" 1516 tty2 ... /usr/libexec/gdm-wayland-session /usr/bin/gnome-session 2226 ? /usr/bin/Xwayland :0 -rootless -noreset -accessx ‐core ... However, you must be careful when interpreting the result. There may be multiple instances of the graphics system running to display the login box as well as to display the desktop system for the currently logged-in user.
