Debian packages are managed on two levels. This section describes the dpkg command, which is responsible for installing and managing packages at the lower level. dpkg is similar to rpm. The command can install, update, and remove individual packages, testing if all package dependencies are fulfilled.
Similar to rpm, dpkg fails to resolve unfulfilled package dependencies itself or load packages from package sources on its own. APT (Advanced Package Tool; see Section 16.6) fulfills precisely these tasks. It is based on dpkg and provides similar features as the DNF and ZYpp systems just presented.
