This section provides an overview of the Emacs configuration files and describes some elementary configuration steps.
The user-specific configuration can be performed either by using menu commands (Options menu) or by a direct modification of the .emacs configuration files. Note that some distributions automatically copy Emacs configuration files from /etc/skel to the user directory when creating new Linux users!
If your version of Emacs behaves differently than described in this book, the configuration of your Linux distribution is often responsible. The settings can be located in both personal and global configuration files (site-start.el):
