The traditional Init-V system is now only used by a very few distributions to perform system initialization and start network services. However, even in current distributions there are occasional services that are still controlled by conventional Init-V scripts. Although systemd takes care of such legacy issues, it is good to know how Init-V is designed and what parts it’s composed of.
A system startup by the Init-V system is carried out in the following steps (described in shortened form):
GRUB loads and starts the kernel.
The kernel starts the /sbin/init program.
init analyzes the /etc/inittab configuration file.
init executes a script for system initialization.
init executes the /etc/rc.d/rc ...
