The rsnapshot Perl script from the package of the same name also builds on rsync. Unlike the rdiff-backup command just described, it uses hard links to access previously backed up files from previous backups. This makes accessing older backup versions (snapshots) easier than when you use rdiff-backup. A compression of the backups, on the other hand, is not provided.
rsnapshot is designed to run the script automatically on a regular basis. rsnapshot backs up both local directories and, via SSH, directories from other machines on the local network when configured appropriately.
