PackageKit is a library for communication with various package management systems. The peculiarity of PackageKit is that it is compatible with several package management systems, including APT, DNF, Pacman, and ZYpp. PackageKit thus creates a common, distribution-independent basis for user interfaces for package management and updates.
PackageKit has not been maintained since 2014. On the GNOME blog, developer Richard Hughes doesn't see much of a future for the project (https://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2019/02/14/packagekit-is-dead-long-live-well-something-else).
Nevertheless, PackageKit is still used by various programs in the desktop area—among others, by gnome-software and by Discover (KDE).
