There is nothing mysterious about partitioning a hard disk or SSD. The aim is simply to divide the data medium into areas for different uses.
The problem, however, is that the basic principles of partitioning go back to the 1980s, when a hard disk with 50 MiB was huge and nobody could imagine a solid-state disk.
