The rsync command synchronizes directory trees. You can use it to copy all files from one directory to a new directory in the first pass. In subsequent runs, only changed files will be copied and (if you want) deletions will also be replicated. rsync is therefore ideal for synchronizing a complete copy of a directory on an external hard disk on a daily or weekly basis, for example. rsync can also be used via network connections.
By default, the communication takes place via ssh. This means that the data transfer is also encrypted at the same time. As an alternative, you can use another external shell program or configure an rsync server on the remote side.
