15.5 Zeroconf and Avahi
In this book, I generally assume that you either configure the computers in your network yourself or obtain the IP configuration from a central router or DHCP server. But there is a third way: automatic configuration by Zeroconf.
In this procedure, all computers connected to the network exchange their configuration data. New computers or devices connected to the network use this information to configure themselves so that they can communicate with the other devices without conflicts. The automatically configured hosts use addresses from IP range 169.254.*.* and host names ending in .local. Zeroconf communication takes place via UDP port 5454.
