Like Fedora and Red Hat, SUSE uses RPM packages. However, the ZYpp package management, which is based on RPM, is a proprietary SUSE development. ZYpp stands for ZENworks, YaST, Packages and Patches, where the use of ZENworks is optional and only provided in SUSE Enterprise distributions.
Behind the scenes, the libzypp library provides the basic ZYpp functions. libzypp can handle both YaST and Yum package sources. All configuration, database and cache files are located in the /var/lib/zypp directory. Both YaST and PackageKit rely on libzypp on openSUSE.
