The moderator's primary job during a session is to observe and interact with the participant.
Generally, we prefer not to take obvious notes during sessions, except when the moderating software allows for real-time tagging. This is a very handy feature that makes it easy to take short notes that can be a huge time-saver during the analysis.
Instead, we recommend scheduling the sessions in such a way that there is a lot of time between them, so that you can document your observations while they are still fresh, before the next session begins. If this is not possible, then the second best option is to have a team member take notes.
