Blocking usability issues
It is possible that a usability issue is related to the main features of that product. Thus, every participant using the product will encounter it and be blocked by it. Subsequent sessions will yield limited feedback due to this type of blocking issue. The decision can be made to halt the sessions and run another study only after those issues are fixed.
Blocking issues like this should be discovered by the UX researcher when they write the discussion guide. If that is the case, the UX researcher will inform the study sponsor while creating the discussion guide.
