A study is an artificial construct that aims to mimic real life as closely as possible, in order to gather data. Study participants are an artificially created group that represents the larger user population as best as possible. Yet, this artificially constructed group will not perfectly reflect a random subset of the user population.
Think about what would happen if you were to stand at the entrance of a store or a subway station and ask people if they wanted to take part in a survey. Some people won't have time, others won't trust it, and others don't like to talk about their opinions.
