When writing the survey questions, it is important to imagine the range of possible responses. For example, the question "Did you consult the manual when setting up the device?" will probably lead the study sponsors to immediately ask in which cases this was necessary. Therefore, a natural follow-up question would be "For which tasks did you consult the manual?". Other subsequent questions could be whether the manual helped the participant complete the task, and/or whether the participant usually consults the manual. As there is no opportunity to come up with these questions on the fly in a survey-based UX study, they need to be considered when writing the survey.
