During the recruiting process, participants were screened and re-screened; they fit the profile, their command of the language was satisfactory, and they were able to communicate effectively.
Yet, during the session, the participant just doesn't get it; they don't understand the study approach, their feedback is irrelevant, and any efforts from the moderator to bring the participant back on track are in vain. This does happen. In these cases, it becomes clear that the session is a waste of time long before the session time is up. The decision to abort the session is usually made with a consensus from the team and the observers.
