What is quite special (and confusing!) about a UI Action is that the code that it runs can be either server- or client-side. In the definition of the UI Action, you can choose the Client checkbox, which will make an Onclick field appear. Any code that is entered here is placed directly in the HTML element on the rendered page, unsurprisingly, in the onclick attribute.
Additionally, the contents of the Script field are copied onto the page and enclosed in a <script> tag each time the button is shown. This is often used to provide a client-side function for the button to use.
