The scuba industry in the United States is a $420 million industry with a growth rate of near 3 percent. Training accounts for nearly 55 percent of all revenue, 14 percent equipment rentals, and the remaining 31 percent spent on travel. Disposable income increased 1.2 percent annually from 2010 through 2014, and an overall increase in consumer sentiment helped industry growth. Scuba divers in the United States becoming certified as Open Water divers in 2009 totaled 141,000; this increased to 146,000 by 2013. A declining unemployment rate and increased consumer spending are such that the scuba industry is expected to see growth rates of 2.7 percent.
