Harley-Davidson sells a vehicle that can result in injury or death. An increase in motorcycle popularity has been accompanied by increases in motorcycle-related fatalities and injuries. There were 4,957 motorcyclists killed in 2012—an increase of 7 percent from the 2011 fatality rate. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, in terms of per vehicle mile traveled, motorcyclists were more than 26 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash.
