History
TASAR traces its history back to 1969 when NASA researcher Jack Cover began developing a powerful, yet nonlethal, device that he named Tom A. Swift’s Electric Rifle after his childhood hero Tom A. Swift. However, the earliest TASER used gunpowder, forcing the product to be classified as a firearm in 1976. It was not until 1993 when Rick and Thomas Smith, along with Jack Cover, developed an electronic-controlled device did TASER take on more the function that it has today, and one in which the U.S. firearms regulators did not classily as a firearm.
