TASER-related deaths continue to be a concern in the United States and abroad. The U.S. Supreme Court is presently considering whether to hear a case related to a TASER death. In 2011, the Justice Department ruled using TASERs was appropriate to subdue individuals, but not to use the device multiple times. Resultant deaths in the United States from being “tasered” range from 60 by some accounts to Amnesty International’s estimate of 540 deaths. The wide discrepancy in deaths stems from many TASER-related deaths being blamed on drug overdoses or heavily intoxicated individuals.
