Mechanic 3 – actions

If objects and their attributes are nouns and adjectives: actions are the verbs. Steering, accelerating, braking. These verbs describe the actions available to the car object we discussed before.

Schell describes two types of actions:

  • Operative actions
  • Resultant actions

Operative actions are the basic actions available in the game. Actions such as jumping, moving, shooting, reloading, and accelerating.

Resultant actions are those that emerge from the operative actions. Accelerating and braking at the right time in a car racing game might result in overtaking the car ahead.
