Jump!

Probably the most famous mechanic of all. Super Mario Bros (1983) featured only two main mechanics: running and jumping.

By pressing a button Mario can jump into the air, so he is able to stomp on enemies or reach platforms on different levels. That jump mechanic has been replicated in endless games and given birth to an entire genre: The Platformer. In the following image, we can see Mario in action:
